Application takeover

Take over an application when a previous developer has moved on.

What is an application takeover?

An application takeover is when we take responsibility for software someone else built, usually after the original developer has moved on. We secure access to the code, hosting and accounts in your name, work out how the software works, fix what’s urgent and agree a plan to maintain, improve or rebuild it.

What problem does a takeover solve?

When the original developer leaves, businesses are often left with software nobody fully understands. Logins sit in someone’s personal account, nothing is documented, updates stopped months ago and every change feels risky.

A takeover brings it back under your control. Access moves into your accounts, the software is documented, urgent problems are fixed first, and you get an honest recommendation on what to do next.

What you get

The codebase, hosting and documentation brought back under control, with a clear plan for what to fix or keep.

Application takeover

What’s included

  • Access recovery

A plan to get the code, hosting, domains and accounts transferred into your name.

  • Code, hosting and data review

A technical review of how the software works and where the risks are.

  • Documentation

How it works, written down, so you’re never in this position again.

  • Urgent fixes

Security updates and anything that’s actively broken, fixed first.

  • Monitoring and backups

Set up early, so nothing gets worse while the plan is agreed.

  • A plan for what’s next

Maintain, fix or rebuild, with the reasons, so the decision rests on evidence.

Who an application takeover suits

A good fit for

  • Businesses whose developer has left. The most common start: no logins, no documentation, no updates.
  • Stalled or half-finished projects. Work that stopped before it was done.
  • Software with no documentation. When only one person ever understood it.

Probably not the right fit if

  • Your current developer is still available and doing a good job. Keep them.
  • You want a rebuild regardless of what the review finds. That’s a new project.
  • You can’t get any access to the code or hosting at all. We’ll help you try, but there may be nothing to take over.

How it works

How it works

  1. 01

    Secure access

Code, hosting, domains and accounts in your name.

  2. 02

    Understand it

A review of how the software works and where the risks are.

  3. 03

    Stabilise and plan

Fix what is urgent, then agree what comes next.

How long does a takeover take?

Usually the first two weeks: a technical review in week one, then stabilising in week two, with urgent updates and fixes, monitoring and backups set up, and access moved into your accounts. Monthly care starts from there.

How much does an application takeover cost?

It starts with a paid technical review, quoted upfront, so you know what you’re taking on before committing to more. Ongoing care is then a month-to-month care plan at a fixed monthly fee.

About the technical review

Questions

About application takeover

What if we don’t have access to the code?

We help you work out who holds the code and accounts, and how to get them transferred to you. Your contract with the original developer usually matters here.

Will you recommend a rebuild?

Only when the evidence supports it. Often the right answer is to stabilise and improve what exists.

Can you take over an app built with AI tools?

Yes. AI-built prototypes often need the same work: a review of permissions, data, security and deployment before they’re safe to rely on.

What do we need to give you?

Whatever you have: logins, contracts, old emails with the developer and a list of what the software should do. Gaps are normal; the review fills them in.

Who owns the code afterwards?

You do. It sits in your accounts, with documentation, so you’re never dependent on one developer again, including us.
